Organizing Tip :: Organize Your Closet

Tips To Help You Get Started

  1. Remove all items. In other words, take everything out of the closet. You never know what may be hidden in the corners, on the shelves or in boxes. Once everything is out of the closet, it is the perfect time to clean. Vacuum or clean the floor while nothing is in the way, wipe down baseboards, repaint or repair walls, install hooks or racks, take measurements for storage items, dust lighting fixture, clean shelving...all of these chores can be done quickly and easily when the closet is completely empty.

  2. Pull out everything that doesn’t fit you “TODAY”. If you still believe you’ll fit into them one day, put the items into bins and store them somewhere other than your closet. Give yourself a specific date to check back with these items. This is the day when you will finally make the decision to keep, donate, or sell them.

  3. The goal is to look into your closet and be able to wear anything you choose to pull out. This means that everything should be clean, mended and something you like to wear.

  4. Sort the clothing you intend to keep by a system that works for you. Whether it is by season, color or type. Think about how you want to categorize your clothes and sort them in that way.

  5. Invest in hangers that are thin and don’t take up a lot of space. You’ll be able to hang more clothes in your closet.

  6. Purchase shelf dividers to keep stacks of sweaters from tipping over. They’re also great for keeping purses standing upright on a shelf.

  7. Trade in a floor shoe rack for clear plastic boxes. They’re a better size than standard shoe boxes and they stack compactly on a shelf. The clear plastic lets you find what you need without having to open all the boxes.

  8. An over the door shoe rack can also be used for scarves, socks, belts and small purses.

When it’s all done…Rejoice in the fact that you can now cross “organize the closet” off your to-do list. Relax knowing that you can now locate garments easily and you will no longer dread looking into your closet.
